Our Why

Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads (CISofHR) proactively works within the school system to prevent students from dropping out of school. Our focus is on
creating a strong support system around vulnerable students in underserved school districts, with collaboration from policymakers, school staff, parents, and business partners.

Empowering Students with Comprehensive Support

Communities In Schools Hampton Roads supports Hampton Roads Public School students by providing a network of support through whole school
programming and individualized case management services. We collaborate with stakeholders like school administration, teachers, parents, and community partners to tackle challenges including learning disabilities, social struggles, food insecurity, and homelessness. Our aim is to help all students excel
academically and in life, contributing to the betterment of the community. Interested individuals can refer to our digital booklet and recent reports for more information.

Empowering Students to Succeed

CISofHR empowers students to succeed through a range of comprehensive supports tailored to
individual needs. We provide academic assistance, mentoring, access to basic needs such as food and clothing, and opportunities for extracurricular engagement. Our approach is holistic, addressing not just academic challenges but also social, emotional, and practical barriers to success.
By fostering a supportive environment within schools and partnering with community organizations, we ensure that students have the resources and encouragement they need to thrive academically and beyond.

Tiered Support

Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads (CISofHR) employs a tiered approach to foster a positive school climate and address risk factors.

  • Tier 1 involves school-wide services like motivational speakers and anti-bullying programs.
  • Tier 2 offers targeted small group programs such as academic tutoring for students with common needs, with progress tracking by Site Coordinators.
  • Tier 3 provides individualized support through case management, weekly direct services, and
interventions for students facing specific challenges.

While dropout rates in Hampton Roads’ Public Schools have decreased over the years, there remains a
focus on increasing on-time graduation. CISofHR utilizes a K-12 model because dropout tendencies often begin to develop as early as elementary school, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and support.
